Green Flask Science™Chapter 8.3

Acid and Base Particles

Watch H⁺ and OH⁻ ions change as you add acid and base.

What to do

  1. Pick a beaker of pure water. Count the H⁺ and OH⁻ ions.
  2. Add acid. Count again. Then reset.
  3. Add base. Count again. Then mix equal acid and base.

Controls

Mix works on the Equal HCl + NaOH beaker. Use the Reset button to go back to pure water.

Data table

Copy your table onto your worksheet. No device? Use the particle cards on the Teacher Prep page. Sort and count ions, then fill in the table.

Check yourself

What happens to H⁺ when you add more acid?

The number of H⁺ goes up and the pH goes down.

What do H⁺ and OH⁻ make when they meet?

Water, H₂O.

What is the pH after equal HCl and NaOH are mixed?

About 7. The solution is neutral.
