Chapter 5.1 · Simulation A
Counting by Weighing
Weigh 10 items, find the mass of one, then predict how many are in a pile.
WHAT TO DO
- Choose Dried beans.
- Click Weigh 10. Record the mass of 10. Divide by 10 to get the mass of 1.
- Read the pile mass. Predict the count: pile mass ÷ mass of 1. Use Check my prediction.
- Click Reveal count. Record the actual count and the percent error. Then repeat with Paper clips.
CONTROLS
Weigh 10 items first.
YOUR MATH
| Mass of 10 items | – |
| Mass of 1 item (÷ 10) | – |
| Pile mass | – |
| Predicted count (pile ÷ mass of 1) | – |
| Actual count | – |
| Percent error | – |
Sample data. Percent error = |predicted − actual| ÷ actual × 100
THE BALANCE
Weigh 10 items to begin.
