Density Lab
Weigh it, measure its volume, and use density to find out what it is made of.
How to use
- Pick a tab: A blocks, B odd-shaped objects, or C float or sink.
- In A and B, weigh the object, find its volume, then work out the density with the calculator. Density is mass divided by volume: D = m / V.
- Round your density to the fewest sig figs of your measurements. Then pick the metal from the table.
- Press Check my answers. You get one retry. At the end, press Show my results and copy them onto your worksheet.

Activity A: Regular blocks
Each block is a box. Find its volume from its sides, then find its density and name the metal.
Activity B: Irregular objects
These objects have odd shapes, so you cannot use a ruler. Drop each one in water. The water level rises by the volume of the object.
Activity C: Float or sink
Pick a liquid and an object. Predict what will happen first. Then watch and compare the densities.

Step 2. Pick an object
