Green Flask Science™Chapter 8.1

Solubility Curves

Add solute to water at different temperatures and find the limit.

What to do

  1. Pick KNO₃. Set the temperature to 20 °C.
  2. Add solute until some stays at the bottom. Record the limit.
  3. Repeat at 40, 60 and 80 °C. Then try KCl and NaCl.

Copy your table onto your worksheet. No device? Use the solubility curve on the Reference Sheet. Read the six values and fill in the table.

Check yourself

Which salt changes the most with temperature?

KNO₃

Which salt barely changes?

NaCl

At 60 °C, you add 100 g KNO₃ to 100 g water. Saturated or unsaturated?

Unsaturated. The limit is 110 g.
