Green Flask Science™Chapter 8.3

Titration Lab

Add NaOH to HCl until the indicator changes. Use the volume to find the HCl strength.

What to do

  1. The flask holds 25.0 mL of HCl with indicator. The burette holds 0.100 M NaOH.
  2. Open the valve slowly. Stop at the first lasting color change.
  3. Record the NaOH volume. Run three trials.

Controls

Go fast at first. Then slow down when you see a pink flash.

Data table

ItemResult

Copy your table onto your worksheet. No device? Use the Sample titration data on the Teacher Prep page (Sample data). Fill in the table and calculate.

Check yourself

Why does the color change tell you to stop?

It shows the acid has been neutralized.

Use Mₐ Vₐ = Mᵦ Vᵦ with your average. What is the HCl molarity?

(0.100 × 20.0) ÷ 25.0 = 0.0800 M (sample data)

Why run three trials?

To check for mistakes and take an average.
